The Single Ventricle: From Anatomy to Pathophysiology
The functional single ventricle comes with a spectrum of varying morphologies that require a clear decision process at birth on the needed operations. Usually operations are staged and multiple. Each has a different set pathophysiology.

Fontan-Associated Liver Disease
The liver is a highly vascular organ. Due to its high metabolic load, it is dependent on a constant blood flow of oxygenated blood but also from the portal system. It is also very sensitive to damage, especially on a chronic basis, when the outflow of blood from the liver is disturbed. The liver, in a patient who has previously had a Fontan procedure, has suffered from vascular supply issues starting before their palliative congenital heart surgery and from a continuous congestive, non-pulsatile flow after surgery. This can lead to long term disease, resulting ultimately in serious complications. These processes and outcomes will be discussed to help the listener to understand the physiology, monitoring, and long term planning for post Fontan patients.
