“These are general screening guidelines for those with average risk for breast cancer and no breast symptoms. Women or men — because men also get breast cancer — who feel a lump or experience breast symptoms, such as pain or nipple discharge, should see their medical provider for an evaluation as soon as possible,” says Dr. Peters.

To learn more about breast cancer screening, listen to Cleveland Clinic’s "Updates in Breast Cancer Screening" podcast.

Cleveland Clinic makes it easy to schedule your mammogram. Some locations even take walk-ins without an appointment.

Why age 45? According to the American Cancer Society, diagnoses of colorectal cancer are decreasing in people over the age of 50, but cases are increasing for those who are younger. Up to 12% of colorectal cancers occur in individuals under the age of 50.

“The current recommendation is mainly for those at average-risk. No matter your age, talk with your doctor if you have symptoms of colorectal cancer. Symptoms include changes in bowel habits, bloody stool, abdominal pain or bloating, or unexplained weight loss,” says Dr. Rosen.

A colonoscopy can save your life, so don’t wait.

Anyone who meets ALL of the following criteria should have a screening for lung cancer every year:

  • You’re between age 50 and 80.
  • You’ve smoked at least 20 pack-years of cigarettes (meaning you multiply the number of packs you smoked each day by the amount of time you smoked, so 20 pack-years is one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years).
  • You are a current smoker or have quit smoking within the past 15 years.

Lung cancer screening is a test to detect lung cancer early, before symptoms develop. The screening, which uses a low-dose CT scan, is quick, painless and could save your life.

No symptoms? It’s still important to get checked for a variety of cancers on a regular schedule. Screening tests, which can help prevent cancer or catch it in the early stages, include general checkups and physical examinations as well as imaging, laboratory and genetic tests.

Choices you make about diet, exercise, and other habits can affect your overall health as well as your risk for developing cancer and other serious diseases. General risk factors for cancer include older age, a personal history of cancer, tobacco use, obesity, alcohol consumption, environmental factors and more.

While this article discusses screenings for breast, colorectal and lung cancer, there are a number of recommended cancer screenings based on these risk factors.

Breast cancer screening

A woman’s lifetime risk (to age 85) of developing breast cancer is 1 in 8. No matter your age, medical history or diagnosis, Cleveland Clinic offers personalized breast care from screening to treatment.

“The effectiveness of any screening program depends on frequency, compliance with screening recommendations and the quality of the screening test,” says Erica Peters, MD, a general surgeon with a specialty interest in breast surgery, who treats patients at Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital and Richard E. Jacobs Health Center at Richard E. Jacobs Campus in Avon, and Strongsville Family Health and Surgery Center. “The recommendations for screenings — breast self-exams, physical exams by providers and mammograms — have changed somewhat over the years, so it’s a good idea to talk with your provider about what is best for you.”

Screening recommendations can vary based on personal and family medical history. For those of average risk, current recommendations include:

  • Monthly breast self-examination starting at age 20.
  • Annual breast physical examination by a healthcare provider starting at age 40.
  • Annual screening mammogram starting at age 40 for most women (depending on personal risk level or family history, some women may need to begin screening earlier). In some cases, frequency may be reduced to every two years if determined appropriate by both patient and physician.

Colorectal cancer screening

Colorectal cancer has the second-highest rate of cancer death in the United States. However, when caught early, it is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer.

“Colorectal cancer starts from little growths called polyps that develop on the lining of the colon or rectum,” says David Rosen, MD, a colorectal surgeon who treats patients at Cleveland Clinic Fairview and Lutheran hospitals, Richard E. Jacobs Health Center and West Valley Medical Building. “Colon problems can be difficult to talk to your family members or friends about. Often, a physician is the only person who knows about the issue. I like that I can involve myself in a patient’s care and help solve their problem.”

A colonoscopy is a routine screening test recommended for all adults ages 45 and older for prevention of colon cancer. The test can detect changes in cells of the colon (large intestine), bleeding and polyps. If polyps are found during the procedure, they can often be removed at that time.

Lung cancer screening

“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S.,” says Sudhir Dudekonda, MD, a pulmonary medicine specialist who treats patients at Cleveland Clinic Richard E. Jacobs Health Center at Richard E. Jacobs Campus in Avon. “Fortunately, early detection through screening can improve outcomes for lung cancer patients.”

According to the American Cancer Society, 85% to 90% of lung cancer patients have had direct or indirect exposure to tobacco products.

“Unless you are screened early, lung cancer isn’t typically diagnosed until advanced stages when it causes symptoms like shortness of breath, cough, bloody phlegm, weight loss and chest pains,” says Dr. Dudekonda. “But early detection is key when it comes to lung cancer. When the disease is found early, 80% or more cases can be cured with radiation or surgery.”

When your doctor recommends a cancer screening, it doesn’t mean that he or she thinks you have cancer. But screening tests can help find cancer early, often before symptoms appear. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it can be easier to treat and cure, reducing your chances of dying from that cancer.
