Caregiver Stories

Tradition Hospital’s 10-Year Anniversary

As we celebrate Tradition Hospital’s 10-year anniversary, we spoke with several caregivers who witnessed the hospital’s significant growth since it served its first patient on December 18, 2013.

Garcia_Donna

Donna Lynn Garcia, Environmental Services Professional

“So, it [this position] gives me the ability to really interact with the patients and their family members.”

“I have the ability to take care of everybody and, one of the best things to do is to give the patient the best caregiving experience that they can have. It's amazing when you can walk into a room and put a smile on somebody's face because you told a dad joke.”

Donna Lynn Garcia is an environmental services professional who has been working at Cleveland Clinic Martin North for the last two years. After a medical condition forced her to leave her accounting job at an import/export company, Donna’s husband, a facility engineer at Cleveland Clinic, suggested she apply for a housekeeping position at Martin North.

Donna works closely with the caregiving team at Cleveland Clinic Martin North, specifically the floor with patients recovering from cardiac conditions. Working with cardiac patients is very personal to Donna. Her father had Quintuple Bypass Surgery in 2004 and her husband had open heart surgery when he was just seventeen years old.

Donna takes great pride in her work, ensuring patients have a clean, tranquil healing environment, as well as creating a personal connection with the patients and their families. “I ask them [patients] if they need anything, a warm blanket, towels, a face cloth.” Donna goes on to say, “I've had patients that didn't have any visitors, so I pick up on that, … [and] if I'm the one person that can bring a smile to their face. I've done my job.” Donna also finds time to encourage the medical students who come through the hospital by writing inspirational quotes on a conference room whiteboard.

Donna is originally from Maine and regularly vacationed in Florida with her family. In 1994, she moved to Florida permanently. Donna found success in corporate America, working in many different roles from bookkeeping to management and administration, but she says working as a caregiver is fulfilling in ways those other positions were not. “I engage with the patients and it really has been a blessing,” she says, “This is very gratifying to me.”

When she’s not working or telling “Dad” jokes, she enjoys spending time with her husband, cooking, playing dominos, and taking care of the family’s Siberian Husky.

Ryann Delahunty, Lead Registered Dietitian

Ryann Delahunty is a lead registered dietitian who serves both Cleveland Clinic Martin North and South Hospitals. She joined the health system 15 years ago when it was Martin Memorial.

Ryann says she was probably "destined" to work in healthcare; her mother was a nurse and her father worked in nuclear medicine. As an athlete from childhood through college, she also developed an in depth understanding of nutrition's impact on health and performance, "I used to sit at the breakfast table eating cereal and reading nutrition labels," she says. Ryann initially wanted to pursue a career as a sports dietitian before changing course.

As she entered the internship phase of her education, Ryann determined the hospital would be a great place to learn. "I would become more familiar with nutrition therapy that goes along with different disease states," she says. That decision helped her land a part time job at Martin Memorial shortly after graduation. Ryann then left her home state of Pennsylvania for Florida, a place where she had vacationed with her family and hoped she would return to one day.

Ryann manages the daily nutritional needs of patients in the hospitals, specifically an intensive care unit (ICU), as well as the dialysis and medical surgical units. As the lead registered dietitian, she is also part of her department's leadership team and works closely with the director of nutrition.

Having spent her entire healthcare career within the Martin system, Ryann is grateful for the team she is working with. "There's just a really small, close knit feel … I think that is the backbone and really what makes this a great place to be," she says. Ryann is also thankful for the opportunities she has received, "Cleveland Clinic coming to our community has opened doors that I otherwise never would have been able to see or to experience."

When she is not working, Ryann loves spending time on the water with her husband, daughter and German Shorthaired Pointer. She also enjoys playing tennis, cards and other games with her family.

Rochelle Moises

Rochelle Moises, Clinical Lead, Physical Therapy

Rochelle Moises is a clinical lead in the physical therapy department at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, which includes Cleveland Clinic Martin North, Martin South and Tradition hospitals. She has been a clinical lead since 2020, but she started as a physical therapist with the system when it was Martin Memorial in 2014. Rochelle is a Certified Neonatal Therapist and one of only three physical therapists who treat babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

After 20 years of being a physical therapist, Rochelle saw an opportunity to make a bigger impact on her department and she applied for the clinical lead position. Rochelle says, “I wanted to make my coworkers’ lives easier so they can just focus on patient care.” One of her recent initiatives was getting iPads to provide mobile video call translation services. She was also an integral part of the Martin Memorial to Cleveland Clinic transition. Rochelle credits her team for how great they work together to get things done.Rochelle’s day consists of administrative duties like managing the schedules for all the physical therapists at the three hospitals and providing patient care. She tells us the moments when she is helping patients are "What I love most about my job." As a physical therapist, Rochelle helps patients in the hospital regain mobility and function through exercise and education.

She shared a story about one particular patient who could not walk without assistance when she first arrived at the hospital. “It was truly a team effort,” Rochelle says, “but after many weeks in the hospital, she was finally able to walk on her own.” When speaking to Rochelle, it is clear she has a deep commitment to her coworkers and her patients.

Looking back, Rochelle says she initially wanted to be an accountant. After graduating high school in the Philippines, Rochelle moved to the United States, where her aunt persuaded her to become a physical therapist. Now, she can’t imagine doing anything else.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and daughters. When they are not at the girls’ volleyball games, they are traveling.
Longarzo_Anthony

Anthony Longarzo , Computer Support Technician III – Cleveland Clinic Martin South Hospital

Anthony Longarzo is a computer support technician at Cleveland Clinic Martin South Hospital.  He has been with Cleveland Clinic in Florida for about three years; his first role was at Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital.

Anthony says he got into information technology (IT) like many people do, by tinkering with computers at home. He has spent 20 years in the IT industry. His last position was with Best Buy where he managed a large territory in Florida.  But, when COVID hit, he knew it was time for his career to go in a different direction.
His wife, who is a nurse at Cleveland Clinic, encouraged him to apply for a position at the organization. Anthony got the job. He says the transition to healthcare has gone smoothly. He really enjoys the collaborative environment, working at Cleveland Clinic has been a natural fit.

Anthony quickly gained a reputation for being ‘the cleaner.’ “I come in and fix things, make sure everything gets back online and try to basically make sure we're up to par at every hospital site,” he says. Anthony works on both hardware and software and has close relationships throughout the organization from clinical engineers to nursing caregivers and the administrative team. Sometimes, he gets calls for issues that are not IT related, but that doesn’t stop him from helping. “I try not to turn any caregiver away,” Anthony says. The relationships he has cultivated help him manage those non-IT calls.
On a typical day, Anthony is working behind the scenes ensuring the organization’s technology is running smoothly. However, that was tested during a recent cyber incident. He and his coworkers had to jump into action to get systems back up, functioning correctly and quickly.
During his free time, Anthony stays busy working on his house, gaming and spending time with his family.  Anthony, his wife and teenagers, all enjoy spending time outdoors and traveling to places like North Carolina.  He hopes to continue growing his career at Cleveland Clinic and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in cloud computing.
